Mysterious and Unexplored

The least frequented of the Central Asian states Turkmenistan is a fascinating country to explore. Lying on the fabled Silk Road it boasts the ruined cities of Merv and Konya Urgench and the expanse of the Karakum desert, where in times gone by, caravans traversed.

For many the allure of visiting Turkmenistan lies in its former leader, the wildly eccentric dictator President Niyazov – better known as ‘Turkmenbashi’ or leader of the Turkmen. Although he died in 2006 the country is littered with monuments and golden statues dedicated to him.

Epic Turkmenistan

Bordered by the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan is a unique and intriguing country. Rich in oil and gas reserves she was until recently ruled by President Niyazov who nurtured a bizarre cult of personality.

The country’s wealth is easily seen in the glistening glass towers and structures of the capital Ashgabat. This modernity is in stark contrast with the rugged and harsh nature of a land dominated by the Karakum Desert and the ruins of the ancient Silk Road of Merv and Konya-Urgench.

Central Asia’s least visited countries is a joy to behold and the Turkmen are as welcoming a people as yu could ever wish to meet.
