Turkmenistan Adventure - Itinerary
One of the least visited but most fascinating of Central Asian countries’ Turkmenistan is a blend of old and new. Gleaming Ashgabat bristles with glass and steel whilst the ruins of Nisa and Merv hark back to the days of the fabled Silk Road of two thousand years ago.
We also visit a natural wonder known locally as the ‘Door to Hell’. This huge crater of fire and flame is caused by a natural gas field which collapsed in to an underground cavern.
Day 1
Ashgabat

Begin with the Park of Independence and Neutrality Square with its bizarre Arch of Neutrality.

Visit the National Museum of History with artefacts from Nisa and Merv.

Head south to the Kopetdag Mountains and a cable car ride offering breath-taking panoramic views of the city and surrounding foothills.
Day 2
Ashbagat – Mary (Merv)

Depart early for flight to Mary. Drive to Gonur Depe, one of the oldest cities in the Margush area. Have a picnic lunch at the site before driving back to Mary.

Arrive in Mary in the afternoon and check in to hotel.
Day 3
Mary (Merv)

Visit Ancient Merv, one of the major archaeological sites of Central Asia. Merv played an important part in the development of the Silk Road for more than 2,000 years and was a major oasis city.

Return to present day Mary and the Regional Museum.
Day 4
Mary – Konya Urgench

Early flight to Dashoguz. From here proceed to Konya Urgench, former capital of the medieval Khorezmshah Empire.

Return to Dashoguz and our hotel.
Day 5
Konya Urgench– Izmukshir – Camp site (Door To Hell)

Depart for Izmukshir, an ancient stronghold and the mausoleum of Abulkasim az-Zamakhshari – a distinguished medieval philosopher, theologian and linguist.

Turn off the highway and head for the “Door to Hell” – a large crater of fire, boiling mud and orange flames.

Set up camp and enjoy a delicious nomadic dinner under the stars before retiring to our tents for the night.
Day 6
Camp site – Ashgabat

Before we leave visit two more craters, one filled with water and the other with mud, both bubbling with natural gas.

Arrive in Ashgabat in late afternoon and transfer to hotel.
Day 7
Ashgabat – Nisa – Ashgabat

Depart for the old fortress of Nisa, another UNESCO listed World Heritage Site and the earliest capital of the Parthian Empire. Proceed to Kipchak village with the largest mosque in Turkmenistan and the family mausoleum of the first President.

Return to Ashgabat and the Fine Arts Museum.
Day 8
Ashgabat

Transfer to Ashgabat Airport for your onward flight.
