Spiritual South India - Itinerary
This 9 day trip allows you to get to the spiritual heart of south India. Visit amazing Hindu places of worship such as the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai with its towering gopurams which dominate the city skyline. Witness an evening puja (prayer ceremony). At Pondicherry visit Auroville, an experimental township and the Aurobindo Ashram – a spiritual community.
Chennai – Mahabalipuram
Arrive at Chennai International Airport where you will be met and welcomed by your Indian guide. Transfer by road to your hotel, the Grande Bay Resort in Mahabalipuram on the Coromandel Coast for checking-in and briefing of the tour. The remainder of the day is free at leisure.
In the morning explore the surrounding villages by bicycle. Visit the small village of Kadumbadi with its school and farmlands. Cycle to a potters house for a small demonstration in their backyard workshop. Try your hand at making a pot!
In the afternoon visit Mamammapuram with its UNESCO World Heritage listed monuments – most notably the Five Rathas, Sea Shore Temple and Arjun’s Penance.
Mahabalipuram – Tiruvanamalai
After breakfast drive to Tiruvanamalai via Kanchipuram with its 8th century Kailashanathar Temple dedicated to Shiva. Take a look at the Ekambareshwar Temple, one of the largest in Kanchipuram.
Continue on to Tiruvanamalai and the Sparsha Resort.
Tiruvanamalai – Pondicherry
After breakfast drive to Pondicherry via Auroville, an experimental township founded in 1968.
Arrive in Pondicherry and our hotel, The Atithi and embark on a sightseeing tour including the Aurobindo Ashram, Manakula Vinayakar Temple and busy India market on Nehru Street.
Pondicherry – Tanjore
After breakfast we depart for Tanjore. En route we stop at the Airavatesvara Temple; a fine example of Dravidian architecture.
In Tanjore the first visit is to Tanjore Bronze Art Gallery with its impressive bronze sculpture collection. Next is the Brihadeshwara Siva Temple in Thanjavur. The temple was built by Raja Raja in 1010. Proceed to The Sangam hotel.
Tanjore – Madurai
After breakfast we take a drive to Madurai. Stop at Karaikudi to visit Chettinad Palace. Built in 1912, the palace is admired for its typical architecture and regal interior.
Arrive in Madurai and check in to the GRT Regency Hotel. Remainder of day is free at leisure.
This morning there is a cycle rickshaw tour of Madurai. Madurai is one of the old cities in India and is built around the Meenakshi Amman Temple. The temple is dedicated to Parvati and Shiva and has 14 gopurams (elaborate gateway towers).
Other sites visited include the Thirumalai nayakar Mahal Temple, Mari Amman Temple tank and busy Madurai local Market.
Return to the Meenakshi Amman Temple for the night ceremony.
Madurai – Kanayaumari
After breakfast drive to Kanyakumari, formerly known as Cape Comorin – On arrival check into the Sparsha Hotel followed by sightseeing of Kanayakumari visiting Mahatma Gandhi Memorial, Thiruvalluvar Statue and Vivekananda Rock Memorial.
Kanayaumari – Trivandrum
Departure transfer to Trivandrum and your onward flight.
