North India Classic Tour - Itinerary
Discover the magical cities of Rajasthan, each with own distinct character and history. Starting in Delhi with its mix of British and Mughal influences we head to Mandawa and its colourfully decorated havelis. We then head west to the walled city of Bikaner and onto the amazing sandstone city of Jaisalmer at the edge of the Thar Desert. In the blue city of Jodhpur visit the imposing Mehrangarh Fort and delight in the lake city of Udaipur before arriving in the pink city of Jaipur. Throw in a tiger safari, the Taj Mahal, the erotic temples at Khajuraho and the ancient pilgrimage site of Varanasi and you have a comprehensive north Indian experience.
Arrive at Delhi International Airport and transfer to your hotel.
Drive past the Red Fort and visit the Jama Masjid. Ride rickshaws through bustling Chandni Chowk ending at Rajghat, the site of Mahatma Gandhi’s Cremation.
Explore New Delhi including India gate and “Rashtrapati Bhawan” – the presidential palace. Also visit the 234-foot high Qutab Minar.
Delhi – Mandawa
Drive to Mandawa in the area of Shekhawati, renowned or its extraordinary painted Havelis.
Visit some of best preserved havelis before returning to the hotel.
Mandawa – Bikaner
Drive to Bikaner founded in 1488. The old city is surrounded by an imposing stone wall with five gates.
City tour of Bikaner including Junagarh Fort built Raja Rai Singh, a general in the army of Emperor Akbar.
Bikaner – Jaisalmer
Drive east to Jaisalmer on the edge of the Thar Desert.
Arrive in Jaisalmer late afternoon and transfer to hotel.
Guided walk around the fort with its narrow cobbled streets and Jain temples.
Camel ride at Khuri Sand Dunes.
Jaisalmer - Jodphur
Long drive to Jodphur. As a legacy of its glorious past, Jodhpur boasts some stunning palaces, forts and temples.
Remainder of the day is at leisure.
Jodphur – Mount Abu
Sightseeing tour of Jodphur including the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort, set upon on a rocky cliff. The museum within the Fort is one of the finest in Rajasthan. Later browse in Sadar Bazaar.
Drive on to Mount Abu arriving in the later afternoon.
Mount Abu – Udaipur
Leave for Udaipur stopping en route at the beautiful Jain temple complex at Ranakpur.
Continue on to Udaipur and check in at the hotel.
Sightseeing tour of Udaipur including the City Palace on Lake Pichola, the Jagdish temple and the beautiful garden surrounding the Pratap Memorial overlooking Fateh Sagar Lake.
Free time at leisure.
Boat ride on Lake Pichola and visit Jag Mandir Island with its Summer Palace.
Udaipur – Pushkar
Stop at Chittorgarh, India’s largest fort en route to Pushkar.
We arrive late afternoon in Pushkar.
Pushkar – Jaipur
Visit the Brahma Temple in Pushkar and the Dargah Sarif in Ajmer.
Continue on to Jaipur.
Visit Amber Fort, on the rugged hills outside Jaipur and ascend to the Fort on the back of trained elephants with mahouts.
Jaipur city tour with the City Palace and Jantar-Mantar, an observatory constructed by Maharaja Jai Singh.
Jaipur – Ranthambore
Drive to Ranthambore.
Enjoy a jungle jeep safari in Ranthambore National Park for the chance to sight tigers.
Ranthambore – Agra
Another jeep safari followed by drive to Agra stopping at Fatehpur Sikri – the 16th century capital of the Mughal rulers.
Arrive in Agra.
View the wondrous Taj Mahal, standing majestically on the banks of the River Yamuna.
Proceed to the vast red sandstone Agra Fort.
Agra – Jhansi
Board air-conditioned train to Jhansi.
Sightseeing in Orchha, founded in the 16th century and renowned for the exquisite Jehangir Mahal, a tiered palace crowned by graceful chhatris.
Jhansi – Khajuraho
Drive to Khajuraho, known for its temples dating back to the 10th and 12th century.
Visit the famous temples with their intricate erotic carvings.
Khajuraho – Varanasi
Following breakfast we transfer to the airport for the flight to Varanasi. Free time at leisure.
We head to the famous ghats on the River Ganges to observe an evening Aarti ceremony.
Varanasi - Delhi
Early in the morning we enjoy a boat ride on the River Ganges where thousands of pilgrims chant prayers and bathe. Photographing the throngs of worshippers, for many this will be their personal highlight as we watch a sunrise from the boat.
We drive out to nearby Sarnath, a holy site for Buddhists worldwide. After attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya the Buddha went to Sarnath; and it was here that he preached his first discourse in the deer park. Sarnath has been developed as a place of pilgrimage and a number of countries such as Thailand, Japan, Tibet, Sri Lanka and Myanmar have established temples and monasteries in the style that is typical for the respective country.
Transfer to Delhi International Airport for your onward flight.
