    Laos Explorer - Itinerary

    As well as visiting all the main places of interest such as Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Van Vieng, this trip includes a fascinating trip to the relatively unknown Khong Island. Here we embark on a trek through rain forests and ethnic villages to glimpse a way of life seldom seen. The scenery is at times breath-taking as we visit several waterfalls including Khone Phapeng – the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia.

    Day 1

    Vientiane – Arrival

    In the morning

    Arrive at Vientiane where you will be met and welcomed by your Laos guide. Transfer to your hotel for checking-in and briefing of the tour.

    In the afternoon

    Remainder of the day is free at leisure.



    Day 2

    Vientiane

    Vientiane
    In the morning

    Full day sightseeing of the Laos capital including its oldest temple Wat Sisaket, famed for its thousands of miniature Buddha statues. Also included is Laos’ national icon the That Luang Stupa and the Patuxay Arch – Vientiane’s version of the Arc de Triumph.

    In the afternoon

    Drive out to Buddha Park; an enchanting and somewhat bizarre collection of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures located near the Friendship Bridge. There are roughly 200 religious images dating back over 500 years, believed to be the creation of Buddhist monk.

    Day 3

    Vientiane – Van Vieng

    In the morning

    Depart the capital on Route 13 for the small town of Vang Vieng. En route stop at Vang Xang, an 11th century archaeological site.

    In the afternoon

    Arrive in Vang Vieng nestled on a bend on the Nam Song River. Visit the Tham Jang Caves on the other side of the river and have a short trek through some stunning mountain scenery to another cave at Tam None and some nearby hill villages.

    In the evening

    End the day with a superb panorama of the sun setting over the Nam Son River.

    Day 4

    Van Vieng

    Van Vieng
    In the morning

    Depart for the limestone Tham Phoukham caves set amid lush forests. Along the way, stop at local villages to witness the lives of the rural population. At Tham Phoukham there is a small natural pool where you can take a dip to refresh yourself.

    In the afternoon

    After a picnic lunch we explore the area on foot and visit some neighboring villages of the Hmong, Souay and Taidam ethnic minorities before returning by road to Vang Vieng.

    Day 5

    Van Vieng – Xieng Khoang (Plain Of Jars)

    In the morning

    After breakfast, head to Xieng Khoang province (approx. 6 hour drive). After several photo stops, continue driving and enjoying the splendid natural scenery of the mountains, forest and landscape. The journey will take us over mountainous regions until we approach Phonesavanh at mid-afternoon.

    In the afternoon

    Continue to the Plain of Jar sites 1 and 2. Transfer to check in the hotel.

    Day 6

    Xieng Khoang – Luang Prabang

    In the morning

    Make an early start for our expedition up Route 13 north to Luang Prabang (approx. 7 hour drive). Luang Prabang is perhaps the best-preserved traditional city in Southeast Asia. The roads are well paved along the way for a smooth journey. We will pass some stunning scenery with a mixture of steep terraced fields and hill villages. There will be a few photo stops at some small hill tribe villages en route. Each hill tribe village in Laos has a different feel, some are more prosperous than others but all have plenty of life.

    In the afternoon

    Muang Xieng Nguen village is our next stop and we will spend a short time observing the local lifestyle prior to reaching Luang Prabang.

    Day 7

    Luang Prabang

    In the morning

    Take a short guided tour including the city’s oldest temple, Wat Sene and the magnificent Wat Xieng Thong with its impressive “tree of life” mosaic set in coloured glass. Its exterior architecture is also remarkable with its low sweeping roof – typical of classical Lao architecture.

    In the afternoon

    Cruise up the Mekong River to the mysterious Pak Ou Caves. The two caves are linked and contain thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by pilgrims. Along the way, stop at the village of Ban Xang Hai, famous for the production of Lao rice wine. On the return to Luang Prabang stop at small village well known for its hand weaving.

    Day 8

    Luang Prabang

    In the morning

    Drive to the beautiful Khuang Si Falls where the waters tumble over multi-tiered limestone formations into a series of turquoise pools. Visit a nearby black bear sanctuary and enjoy a picnic lunch near the falls before returning to Luang Prabang.

    In the afternoon

    An afternoon’s sightseeing of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore Wat Xiang Thong, the country’s most important Buddhist monastery, Wat Visoun, Wat Khili and, if time, Wat Mai. Tour the former Royal Palace, now a National Museum with ornate, gilded and brocaded reception rooms, as well as various Buddha artifacts including the Prabang, a large holy image donated by the Khmer Kingdom in the 14th century.

    In the evening

    At sunset climb nearby Phousi Hill for great views of the town and river. There will be time to visit the Night Bazaar where you can find lovely handmade textiles created by the locals and the hill tribes.

    Day 9

    Luang Prabang – Champasak

    In the morning

    Transfer to the airport for the short flight to Pakse. Upon arrival transfer to Champassak to visit the 6th century ruins of Wat Phu Temple which predate Angkor Wat by 500 years. Originally built as a shrine to Shiva, the temple is thought to have been linked to Angkor by a 100km road marked with stones.

    Return to Champassak late afternoon.

    Day 10

    In the morning

    After breakfast, drive to Ban Nakasang village. Here we board a small boat to Khone Island where one can find traces of the region’s French colonial-past at Ban Khone with its old colonial houses as well as first Lao railway with its own locomotive. Continue the exploration by tuk tuk to beautiful Liphi Waterfall, which forms a natural border between Lao and Cambodia.

    In the afternoon

    Return to Ban Nakasang by long tail boat and drive to Khone Phapeng – the largest waterfall in South East Asia and known as the ‘Niagara of the East’. Drive to Khong Island late afternoon and overnight here.

    Day 11

    Khong Island – Pakse

    In the morning

    Drive back to Pakse. Along the way, stop at Oup Muong temple, one of the oldest temples in the province. Then take a short boat trip to Done Daeng Island and explore this beautiful island.

    In the afternoon

    Leave the island and continue to Pakse.

    Day 12

    Pakse – Tad Taget Waterfall

    In the morning

    After breakfast, head off towards the Bolaven Plateau, passing though tea and coffee plantations along the way. Continue on to the small village of Ban Non Luang where we rendezvous with the local guide. After a short introduction the guide will talk to you about the different animals in the forest and the medicinal properties of different plants. Then we begin walking through coffee farms and bamboo forests before heading in to the thick forest, arriving at a small waterfall where you have lunch.

    In the afternoon

    Trek through the dense forest for around an hour and a half before heading down the mountain for a further 40 minutes to Tad Taget Waterfall. This is where we set up camp and spend the night. There is the chance to enjoy a swim in this beautiful spot before enjoying a delicious dinner cooked over the campfire. (Total trekking time 6 hours).

    Day 13

    Tad Taget Waterfall – Pakse

    In the morning

    After breakfast there is an uphill climb through Dong Hua Sao National Biodiversity Conservation Area which shares its southern border with Vietnam and Cambodia. Along the way you will hear all sorts of different birds singing and if lucky see monkeys as they pass along the trail. We continue on walking until stopping for lunch at the stunning Tad Kamue Waterfall.

    In the afternoon

    Continue trekking until we reach Danh Ngai Limestone cliffs with some stunning views of Champasak Province. From here we carry on back to Ban Nong Luang via a different trail which takes around 1 ½ hours. Arriving in the village, board our awaiting vehicle for the return to Pakse. En route we stop at the breathtaking 120 metre Tad Fane Waterfall which is fed by the Huay Banglieng River and is without doubt one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the whole of Lao. We arrive back in Pakse in the later afternoon.
