Cambodia Trekking - Itinerary
This is an amazing opportunity to explore the incredible Angkor temple complex and it surrounding jungle area on foot. Discover ancient Khmer ruins shrouded by thick rainforest and trek up Kulen Mountain with its waterfall and stunning scenery. This trip involves roughly seven hours trekking per day and sleeping in tents for most of the tour but the rewards far outweigh the hardships!
Siem Reap – Arrival:
Arrive at Siem Reap Airport and transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free at leisure.
Siem Reap – Wat Preah Bat Bun Than
After breakfast we drive to the outskirts of Siem Reap to begin our trek. We head east to the edge of Tonle Sap Lake passing local markets and traditional Khmer style homes. We pass through a small village and rice paddies with busy farmers hard at work. Stop for a picnic lunch in the shade.
Continue trekking through more paddies and villages until we arrive at Chao Srei Vibol Temple. Our accommodation for the night will be within the grounds of a Buddhist monastery compound at Wat Preah Bat Bun Than in camping tents.
Wat Preah Bat Bun Than – Beng Mealea – Svay Leur
After breakfast we break camp and walk along small local tracks used by the local farmers and villagers. We take lunch in Phum Thmey village near the ruins of Beng Mealea Temple.
Following lunch we continue to trek towards Beng Mealea. Though unrestored, and in a fairly ruinous state, the large temple of Beng Mealea ('Lotus Pond') is located on the ancient Royal Way and is one of the major monuments of the classical period, in the style of Angkor Wat and roughly contemporary with it. After exploring the ruins, enveloped by the jungle we drive the remaining distance to Svay Seur and another monastery compound where we set our tents up for the night.
Svay Leur – Kulen Mountain - Anlong Thom
After breakfast we visit a local market to buy provisions for today’s lunch and dinner. We will need plenty of energy as we embark on a trek up and around Kulen Mountain. The walk provides some excellent scenic views of the mountain and the surrounding countryside.
After lunch near a holy shrine we continue trekking, stopping at a remote primary school in a jungle village at the summit of the mountain. We continue on until we reach tonight’s destination Anlong Thom. Here we will be guests in a small family homestay.
(Trekking 8 -9 hours. Easy to Moderate - Uphill)
Anlong Thom – Siem Reap
After breakfast with our hosts we trek in Kulen Mountain National Park. We discover the exceptional site of Srash Dumrey with its impressive array of 10th century sandstone monoliths of elephants and lions, shrouded in the dense jungle. We walk downhill through the forest to visit a cave inhabited by thousands of bats.
Proceed to a spectacular 30m high jungle waterfall. Here thousands of Lingas have been carved in to the riverbed as the area was once of immense spiritual importance to the Hindu Khmer people. We also visit the Reclining Buddha statue. Eventually we join us with our bus and drive back to Siem Reap and our hotel.
(Trekking 6 -7 hours. Easy to Moderate)
Siem Reap (Ankgor Temple Complex)
Following breakfast at the hotel we drive to the entrance of the Angkor Temple Complex. From here we continue on foot to explore this most amazing open air museum that is Angkor. We begin at Ta Prohm temple, still in the clutches of the jungle as the roots of giant banyan trees claw at the structure’s walls and continue trekking through the rainforest of Angkor National Park. We also get to walk along the great wall of Angkor Thom and visit the stunning Bayon temple.
After a picnic lunch we meet up with a small boat for a short crossing of the great royal moat encircling Angkor Thom before driving the short distance to majestic Angkor Wat which we explore of foot. We return to the hotel at sunset. (Trekking 5 -6 hours. Easy to Moderate)
